yeah but theres swearing and swearing at people,

as in if somone says in local chat.
---- you [insertname] your a ------- noob that can't do ---- etc.

even if chat filter is off a barrage of that won't make the game experiance better, it tones down the mood and is jsut irrating for the people that are just in district watching this, the person that this is aimed at would feel worse.

not sayign you did this you did a simple slip of the typing fingers, but still its an online game and people will tke offence at things.

I swear quite a lot in real life, but in-game I usually tend to use milder language so I wouldn't seem like a raging teenager venting away at my keyboard.

Will I report people using one or two occasional swear words, filter or not? Nope.

Will I report people venting on and on in local chat about something nonsensical continuously swearing? Of course. Why? Because I can. Ha-ha!

This is an argument that can never be resolved.

People always think what they do is completely reasonable and no amount of discussion is going to change their mind. Different people have different tolerance levels for behavior based on their normal "habitat". If for example, your family doesn't swear or tolerate swearing, and you don't work or live around people that swear, you aren't as likely to tolerate it. If on the other hand, its as common as the word "the" in your surroundings, you will never understand people who are offended by it.

Forgive me if I am wrong in my assumptions here, but from what I can tell the OP thinks that swearing is fine to do, but racism and cybersex isn't. If you then talked to the racists and cyber'ers, they would give the exact same arguments about why what they do is fine. (Freedom of speech, this is the internet, everyone does it, you are a puritan, quit QQ, etc.)

Unsolvable problem IMO.

Indeed, because the presence of a profanity filter is not an excuse for swearing.

Guild Wars is privately owned. You don't have freedom of speech there. Swearing, Racism and Sexism are all under the same roof: Types of things that will get you banned. Tolerance levels are determined by anet, which is why they have filters for those whose social standards induce swearing in their nature, which is fine, of course. The filter isn't designed for those who swear to intentionally offend - those are the ones that get banned.

If anyone has a problem with that, Anet advises you to cease playing on their servers, (they actually tell you that you shouldn't be playing when you read their EULA.)

If you get banned, you broke their code of conduct. If you come here to the forums to complain about it, you're just making it worse for yourself. If you disagree with the ban, then you go to plaync's support site, and they will deal to your matter if its worth looking in to... This is an example of something that the support crew will probably ignore. Just so you know.

I think the real question is "why did someone report me for swearing"? It's a breach of the EULA and it was reported so ANet are somewhat compelled to take action. But the person was mean to report you for swearing nonteheless and only did so because they have the power and control to do so. When people have no control in their life, they embrace every single opportunity to do so.

None of us have the facts to be making assumptions of that matter. Swearing on its own will not get a person banned - this is because the word 'swearing' is not listed in the eula, if you read carefully enough. People are allowed to swear, but if you speak in a manner that uses swear to offend and degrade another person on their servers, then you will be banned for it. The rules are simple: You can play on our servers, just don't be an ass.

People are getting confused, assuming that any form of swearing is bad, when the EULA doesn't mention this at all. The EULA outlines context, not words. Filters outline words, that's what they're there for.

If someone says the words as they are spelt so the filter finds them thats - FINE

If people filter dodge they deserve what they get.

Why? well if you don't want to see such words you will have the filter on and if they are typed right the filter catches them so you don't see them. isn't modern technology wonderful

If you have the filter off you don't mind seeing them and can hardly report someone for using them

But this guy was not using these swearwords to attack. He was talking about something non living, that has no feelings. So point in case, the person that reported him reported him for the same reason everyone reports people in this game for the most part and for the same reason puritans in real life go after things they say "offend them" when it really isn't true and they just do things because they have to make the world how they see it.

I've been cursed at in RA/AB for killing someone but I don't report because I know they're only hating me for stripping their mending. I let them be enraged and calmly get on with things. Back in primary school, kids would tell on those who swore to be the do-gooder, teacher's pet and pininacle of morality in the playground. This isn't much different.

sometimes filters can go out of hand, like my friend from nigeria was trying to type where he was from - only to have the word censored. However, intentional swearing really wont help your case. If you really need to swear, write it on a piece of paper instead of offending someone.

I reckon I have a good understanding of the EULA when I say that they mention inappropriate language and not inappropriate words. Language is a form of communication and if you use that language inappropriately, then you will get banned. Swearing is not inherently inappropriate, so you should not get banned for using swear words when your intention is not to act inappropriately. You are a candidate for account banning if you say "I am going to kill you in real life" because you are using language inappropriately.

Is it me, or do I say inappropriately too much that time?

Turning your cheek when someone rages at you is the most sensible thing to do. But when you have the ability to prevent that sort of action from happening, I'd rather take that option instead.

Damned Cleric = ****ed Cleric
Cockatrice Staff = ****atrice Staff.

...among others.

I doubt anybody would be banned for using either of the above, though.

Edit: (@ JeniM) I noticed you can't use G on it's own either probably due to G-String or the other G-word of which we do not speak. We can't use 'Jewel' either because it has 'Jew' in it.

Last time i looked you can't have some letters alone in names incase they offend people

E.G - "G"
Oh no they said "G"

Filters can be annoying but if you don't want to see the words so badly you'd report people then its your choice, deal with the filter or ignore it. Ignoring things isn't hard at all, takes less effort than taking notice of them

nor would you ever be able to even if you had the EULA printed, bound and laminated to perfection to help make the claim...

Right. You are talking about Anet's rules. I was just mentioning the typical excuses for any kind of behavior that people want to participate in.

My solution is, find people to hang out with that behave in a way that I am comfortable with. Turn off chat filters as necessary (right now that is just local chat in towns). Problem solved.

Disclaimer: The following is not addressed at anyone in this thread. It is based on my overall experience in guildwars.

What makes me laugh sometimes is when people say, for example, if you don't like it turn off chat (chat filters can't filter out everything). And then complain about the lack of activity in chat. Or the quality of pugs. Or that their guild/alliance is inactive. How many people did you just tell to turn off chat? Now you complain that no one interacts/chats that you want to play with? /doh You can't have it both ways. If you want a lot of activity, you have to make it so people want to interact. That means treat people with consideration. All people.

I totally see where you're coming from, but I don't bother with all the winding excuses... It gets old. They try to find ways to climb over the wall, when there's a door you can just walk through if you agree to use their key.

There's nothing we can do about it and since this is turning in to a flame fest, I'm closing.
